What the Bible Says About Music

Music is spiritual. That’s why, when you hear a song, it’s hard to get it out of your head. God loves music, and as such, passed that love of music to his creation. The Bible has a lot to say about music.

There has been music from before the creation of the universe. Job 38:4+7 say, “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth…when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” The “morning stars” and “sons of God” are angels (see Rev. 12:4). When God created the universe, the angels sang and shouted for joy.

Lucifer, the highest ranking angel (a Cherub), was created with music built into his body. Ezekiel 28:13 says, speaking of Lucifer, “The workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.” Tabrets is a word similar in meaning to tambourines. Pipes would be similar to an organ. He was the most magnificent being that God created (see Ezekiel 28:12,15,17). He is now the fallen angel satan, the devil, and his abilities with music are just a great as when he was created. He uses those abilities to lie to people through music, seduce people with music, blind people with music, and curse God with music. The devil knows people love music, and he uses it against them.

Jubal was the first human inventor of musical instruments. He was five generations from Adam. Genesis 4:21 says, “And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.”

Because God loves music, the Israelites used music in their worship ceremonies. King David had people in the Tabernacle, who were Levites, whose job it was to sing. 1 Chronicles 6:31-32 says, “And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the Lord…and they ministered before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of the congregation with singing.” (see also 2 Chronicles 29:25) Wherever they took the ark of the covenant, there was music and singing that accompanied it. King David had 4,000 musicians. 1 Chronicles 23:5 says, “four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith.”

There was much music and singing in the ceremonies and celebrations of the Israelites. 2 Chronicles 5:13 says, “It came to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.” 2 Chronicles 30:21 says, “And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness: and the Levites and the Priests praised the Lord day by day, singing with loud instruments unto the Lord.”

2 Chronicles 29:28-30 says, “And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded: and all this continued until the burnt offering was finished. And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped. Moreover Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the LORD with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. And they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped.” Paul and Silas sang praises to God in prison. Acts 16:25 says, “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.” Notice that the prisoners heard them singing praises to God. We should never conceal our praises to the Lord, because praises are worship, and praises are a witness to our spiritual life in Christ.

Unfortunately the devil loves music too, and cause evil people to use music in their festivals. Nebuchadnezzar had music in his idol ceremonies. Daniel 3:5 says, “That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up.” Isaiah 5:11-14 says, “Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them! And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands. Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst. Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.”

Notice that they used all kinds of instruments at their parties. The people had “glory” and they “rejoiced”, but they still went to hell. Notice also that these people are thirsty and famished. They’re looking for something that satisfies, but they can’t find it. Such is the case with the generation today. Nothing seems to satisfy them. The music gets more wicked and loud. The dancing gets more suggestive and sexual. This generation is surrounded by music. There’s music in stores, restaurants, TV commercials and everywhere. When a person is in a store or restaurant, they are being bombarded by the world’s music, even when they don’t notice it.

The world’s music, since it is controlled by the devil, is anti-Christian, anti-moral and anti-God. This music is used by the devil to brainwash those who listen to it. The music today is filled with curse words, sex and drugs. Psalm 109:17-18 says, “As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.” The Bible defines cursing as swear words (see Matt. 26:74). The music of this generation, along with movies, is why this generation is so used to swearing. It is literally everywhere. That is why this generation is cursed. The Bible says it goes into his bones and his bowels.

Songs are spiritual, be they good or bad, and as such, they have a spiritual affect upon us. Many rock songs have words that get into a person’s soul and tell them to commit suicide or murder. Charles Manson was influenced by the Beatle’s song Helter Skelter. A young man and his friend were influenced by the rock group Judas Priest to commit suicide. His friend died. He didn’t. His father said, “”People don’t realize what an effect music has.” See the story here: Songs affect our soul. Songs that are evil vex a person’s spirit. 2 Peter 2:7-8 says, “And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds).” Notice the word “hearing.” Hearing evil, be it words, deeds or music, will vex a person’s soul.

Songs that are good bring peace to our souls. 1 Samuel 16:23 says, “And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.” 1 Corinthians 14:15 says, “I will sing with the spirit.” Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” We are to sing to the Lord, with our voice, our heart and our spirit. Psalm 92:1 & 3 says, “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.” Our music should be full of praise, and if possible, with instruments.

In Heaven there will be music in abundance. Many verses in Revelation tell us events in Heaven. Three times in Revelation we are told there is singing in Heaven. Revelation 5:9 says, “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.” Revelation 14:2-3 says, “And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.” Revelation 15:3 says, “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.” In Heaven everyone will sing, and through eternity never get tired of singing praises to God.

Our music should glorify God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” The word of God tells us what should be in our thought life. These thoughts should be in our music too. Philippians 4:8 says, “whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Suicide is not lovely. Curses are not pure. Adultery is not of good report. If it does not glorify God, and if it does not help us to think on these things, then the music is of satan, and must be put out of our lives!
